What Is SPF in Sunscreens & Why Is It So Important to Check?

SPF is a term everyone has heard of. We don't know what it does, but we know that sunscreen with high SPF is good for your skin. All thanks to the hundreds of ads for beauty products tell us so.

But why don't we take the time to understand SPF? After all, what is it? And how does it work?

A Brief Introduction to SPF

SPF measures how much solar energy (UV radiation) is necessary to cause sunburn on protected skin vs. how much solar energy is required to cause sunburn on exposed skin. Sunburn protection rises as the SPF value of the sunscreen increases.

Simply put, if your skin ordinarily burns after 10 minutes in the sun, using an SPF 15 sunscreen will allow you to stay in the sun for around 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times) without burning.

It is a preliminary estimate based on skin type, sunshine intensity, and the amount of sunscreen worn. SPF is a measure of protection from UVB radiation and is not intended to assist you in deciding the length of exposure.

Importance Of SPF Numbers On Sunscreen

Sunscreen protects your skin and helps lower your risk of skin cancer. When used in conjunction with other sun protection measures, such as wearing dark clothes and sunglasses, SPF helps to limit the detrimental effects of sun exposure.

According to the Skin Disease Foundation, wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 15 decreases your risk of acquiring squamous cell carcinoma by 40% and your risk of developing melanoma (the worst skin cancer) by 50%.

Experts recommend wearing a least SPF of 15 sunscreens, using the correct quantity (2mg/cm2 of skin, or roughly one ounce for full body coverage), and reapplying every 2 hours for optimum protection.

The SPF scale, however, is not linear. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

So, to put it another way, SPF 30 sunscreen only provides 4% more protection than SPF 15 sunscreen. So, while an SPF 30 will not double your degree of protection, it will block half of the radiation that an SPF 15 would allow through to your skin. It isn't easy, but most physicians recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater to keep things simple.

Advantages of a good sunscreen include:

Prevent the Onset of Wrinkles And Fine Lines:

Sunscreen is one of the most potent preventative remedies for wrinkles, fine lines, and crow's feet. However, long-term exposure to UVA radiation prematurely ages your skin and causes collagen and skin elasticity loss. In fact, solar damage is responsible for up to 90% of visible indicators of aging. By including SPF into your everyday skincare routine, you may prevent the early symptoms of aging with little effort.

Sunburn Protection:

Sunburn is caused by UVB rays, which are also known to cause the majority of skin malignancies. Sunburns are not only unpleasant but they are also linked to the most lethal kinds of cancer. A single sunburn can raise a person's chance of developing skin cancer. It is because UV radiation from sunlight may harm the genetic information in skin cells when the skin absorbs it. Sunscreen, fortunately, protects the skin against UV rays by absorbing, reflecting, or dispersing sunlight.

Prevent Blotchy Skin & Hyperpigmentation:

Uneven skin pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation) is the discoloration or darkening of regions of the skin in an uneven manner. It can be inherited, but excessive sun exposure can also be induced. As a result, blotchy skin or black patches may appear on the face, hands, or other regions of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun. Wearing sunscreen regularly is an easy approach to avoid dark spots, sunburn, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

Choosing the right SPF cream is essential for your skin.
